5 hours/weekThe Town of Needham seeks an experienced Environmental Health Agent to serve in a grant-funded role as a regional Environmental Health Trainer, supporting the education and training of public health professionals throughout eastern Massachusetts.
She/he/they will teach new and less experienced local public health staff members how to provide public health services and how to enforce State/Fed Environmental and Sanitary Codes, Town by-laws, and Board of Health Regulations.
CON # 24020This is a grant-funded position through June 30, 2025.
Duties and Responsibilities Train public health professionals how to:
Inspect, permit, and evaluate health risks in full range of food establishments.
Conduct plan reviews, investigate foodborne illness complaints, issue order letters, impose fines, and conduct administrative hearings to ensure safe food operations.
Assist in investigating violations of local and state regulations relating to food, nuisance (noise/odors), housing, tobacco and conduct inspections to protect the public's health.
Oversee compliance with Title Five state sanitary septic code.
Provide ongoing educational services by conducting trainings, delivering cable slots/PSAs, and writing articles for the local newspaper and local cable channel, on public health topics.
Develop social media posts for the different towns' Public Health Division's Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Inform and educate food permit holders and their staff about food safety.
Review online permit applications and conduct a variety of plan reviews (i.
e.
food/tobacco establishments, demolitions, additions to homes on septic systems, pool permit renewals/plan reviews, septic hauler/installers, septic system construction permit applications, animal permits, bodywork permits, disposal of sharps permits, well permits, etc.
), via the towns' online permit application systems.
Required to occasionally serve on-call to respond to emergency situations.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements The following requirements may be substituted by any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job:
Duties require extensive knowledge of environmental health and sanitation equivalent to completion of a four-year college degree program/Bachelor's degree in public or environmental health, or a related field.
At least five (5) years of work experience are required in public or environmental health, public policy, or a related field.
Part-time and volunteer experience will be considered to fulfill a portion of this requirement.
Credentialing or licensure in at least four or more of the following is requiredMA Registered Sanitarian (RS/REHS), Certified Health Official (CHO), Certified Environmental Health Technician (CEHT), MA Soil Evaluator, MA Soil Inspector, MA Lead Paint Determinator, MA Housing Inspector, ServSafe Food Safety Manager/Food Allergy Awareness recipient, and Certified Pool Operator (CPO).
Possession of a valid state-issued driver's license.
Supplemental Information Strong communications skills, both verbal and written.
Environmental health or inspectional, sanitary, or code enforcement experience combined with public health or public policy work is not required, but is considered a plus.
Code enforcement experience a plus, specifically experience conducting food inspections in enforcement of the 2013 Federal Food Code.
Experience with online food inspection software systems/use of iPads, etc.
, for food establishment inspection and data logging/reporting.
A background in policy and/or education attained through either work experience or else a graduate degree in public health, education, or a related field is highly desired.
Credentialing or licensure as a Food Safety Manager/Food Allergy certified, MA Soil Evaluator, MA Lead Paint Determinator, MA Housing Inspector and Certified Pool Operator (CPO) is not required at time of application but if those credentials are not achieved by time of employment, they will be a requirement of continued employment after an approximately 18-month period.
Credentialing or licensure in at least one or more of the followingMA Registered Sanitarian (RS/REHS), Certified Health Official (CHO), or Certified Environmental Health Technician (CEHT)will be a requirement of continued employment after an approximately two-year period.
